I know that all summer long, and even prior to that, the Lord has been preparing me. I will not know all the ways He has done so until on the field, but this week has started something new: saying goodbye. In this, it hit me just how uncomfortable I may be in the weeks to come. Goodbyes are not easy with the people you love. But there is something to be said for that.

I am so beyond grateful to have grown up in a family (biological and friends/church:) who loves. By no means is it perfect, but, man, do I love to laugh with them, spend time with them, and watch them grow. I cannot believe that the “when I was growing up…” or “growing up…” days are rapidly coming to a close.

While away I will attempt to find the balance of keeping up relationships that I currently have while not letting that take away from the race, new relationships, and all God is doing. If you are reading this, please know this: I love you. I am thankful for you. You are worth grieving. And God will also do amazing things through you this year if you will allow Him.

Among other things that I will miss are the beautiful mornings like this morning, having my quiet time with coffee on the porch, summer nights when the sun is headed down and the cicadas are singing their song.

There is nothing in the world like home and the people who grew up with you in it.

It all comes down to this beautiful truth which was recently shared with me: no matter the pain, no matter the grief, no matter where you are, Jesus is your home (John 14). He lives inside us through His Holy Spirit, and we can look to Him to find comfort, peace, and joy in all situations. Praise God that He is constant in our ever changing lives because even as I have to say goodbye to people I love, God is always with me. HE is my Counselor, my Comforter, My Keeper.

Amen

  1. Yes “good byes” are not easy! Sometimes the German “aufvidersein” may feel better as in see you again.
I’m sure it will be worth the goodbyes!
    Love to you Sadie

  2. It is very exciting to see how God has brought you this far, and to see how he will use in this next chapter of life.
Connie and will be praying for you daily.

  3. Oh, dear girl, you have strength than you know. We are praying for your wisdom and peace. And… comfort when you miss the familiar.

  4. I’m so beyond proud of you and excited to see what God has in store for you. Your joy and love for Christ shines so brightly and I have no doubt that the people you come across on your adventure will see it too. It is one of the greatest honors of my life to get to call you sister and friend, and I know that the people you come across this year will one day get that same honor because you become a sister and friend to everybody. So proud of you, Sadie

  6. Sadie,
We are Tim and Susan deForest and we will be your Gap Year coaches this year. We are so excited. We loved reading your blog and learning a little about your wonderful people and home. And then to have you go on and say that you know that Jesus is your forever home, wherever you are. Amazing! We cannot wait to meet you soon!
